Greyhound Play Dates

Check the AGR blog for updates in case of bad weather or wet grassy conditions.

Send your email address to Joan Herner   to be added to the play date notification list.

Location:
3465 E. Kleindale  (old Humane Society Dog Park area)

Directions: Mapquest map available here. The playdate area is located on the north  side of Kleindale road between Country Club and Dodge. Kleindale  is a small east-west road a couple of blocks north of Ft. Lowell. You will see a blue metal fence outside of the Humane Society area.  It is located between Gadabout Salon's corporate headquarters and Ferguson's Plumbing Supply. The building may not be marked, but the blue fence is a good clue.

There is now a building where they do Humane Society training and behind that it is the fenced grassy area where our hounds will run and play. This  area is divided in two by a fence and we normally put the more skittish hounds in the smaller area and the other hounds in the larger one.

Important information: Because we incur  fees for renting the space, we need to collect $4.00  per greyhound family (not per greyhound) for each playdate.  In planning these playdates, we gathered the best of tips from existing  greyhound play groups around the country and came up with the following  rules to ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable time.

Please be aware that muzzles  are required. They can be purchased for $14 at playgroup (price increase from supplier).  Water bowls are available at the playgroup.

Disclaimer: Greyhounds are social animals. Greyhounds are athletes and love to run. Playgroup is a time when greyhound owners allow their dogs to run and socialize with other greyhounds in a safely fenced location. Exercise is very important for the health of the hounds and playgroup is an excellent supplement to their daily walks. Arizona Greyhound Rescue recognizes  these facts and provides the following information on as a service. However, while members of AGR may enjoy and participate in area playgroups, these  playgroups are not organized or sponsored by AGR. All greyhounds and owners who participate in these play groups do so of their own accord and at their own risk. Arizona Greyhound Rescue is not liable for any accident or injury that may occur.  Owners accept full responsibility for participation.

Greyhound Play Date Rules

  • Owners exercise their hounds at their own risk.
  • No small children allowed in the fenced area.
  • No pets, other than sighthounds, allowed in the playgroup or run area.
  • All hounds in the playgroup or run area must be muzzled at all times.
  • Hounds' nails should be trimmed.
  • For fun runs, hounds must be under owner control when not running.
  • No unaltered animals.
  • All poop must be picked up by the owners; please watch your dogs or walk around and pick up at random so the coordinator is not stuck with the task at the end.
  • No food is permitted in the playgroup or run area.

Please note: Not all dogs do well in a playgroup situation.  Playgroup is not a good place for dogs that are overly shy, threatened by other dogs, or aggressive. If you are new to a playgroup situation, try to attend during  off peak times so that your dog can get acclimated to the environment and other  dogs, like perhaps the last half hour. Know your dog and be aware his/her behavior and the behavior of the other dogs participating.
