AGR in the Community

Youth in Philanthropy Program
Each year students partner with fundraising and grant making professionals to give students an opportunity to better understand and practice the act of philanthropy.  Students choose an issue that is important to them and work hard raising money to support the charity of their choice. 150 students from Lauffer Middle School chose animal abuse as their topic and held a competitive grant round to award their hard earned money.  Arizona Greyhound Rescue was honored to receive this funding to support retired racing greyhounds. We would like to thank all the students, Mrs Leckie, Mrs Madina, and Mr. Letson from Lauffer Middle School. All funds raised by the students were matched by the Association of Fundraising Professionals and Every Voice in Action Foundation.  (written by Angy Shearer, AGR fundraising director)

SAFE Animal Fair 2008
AGR went to the animal fair. The birds and beasts were there but it was the greyhounds that made a fashion statement. Greyhounds came en masse and were dressed in warm flannel and fleece to combat the cold and damp weather. Board member Carol Ray chaired the event (again). She had at least 20 volunteers who supported AGR’s efforts and helped make our presence a success.  At one point in the morning, there were at least 15 greyhounds in attendance at the same time. Visitors literally could not get by without first saying "hi" and cuddling a hound. That really got people’s attention. Incredulous feedback could be heard about how well behaved our hounds were compared to the other breeds in attendance.  It was another greyt day and Arizona Greyhound Rescue most certainly raised awareness about the greyhound breed.

Temple Emanu-El at AGR

Temple Emanu-El
Barb Gadola hosted a really great group of nine kids on October 7 from Lee Silva's 8th grade class. She had nine dogs that needed exercise and attention, so each student got their own dog for the morning.  They walked them, played with them in the sprint runs, brushed them, cleaned their ears, then stuffed a Kong for their dog. The hounds were all very tired pups afterwards. They all helped clean up afterwards and put things away when we were all done.  I was defrosting the freezer while I was there and one girl wouldn't leave until she got the last block of ice out of the freezer. A very rewarding morning at the kennel for all!

Days of Caring 2007

Days of Caring 2007
Once again volunteers from Texas Instruments participated in the United Way Days of Caring on Saturday October 6 for Greyhound Spa Day. They came, they ate breakfast bars, they walked and exercised the hounds, they bathed the hounds, and helped clean up. They got a real thrill as just that morning six new dogs appeared (four right off the track) and they got to name them too -- Jovi, Kevin, Blondie, Dagwood, Lyndy, and Reba. Leslie Purpura is the ring leader from TI and we thank her for organizing her crew for the second year. She donated lots of kennel supplies and TI donated a 42-inch wire crate and two martingale collars and matching leashes. Thank you TI.

Desert Pride Parade

Desert Pride Parade
Greyhounds get ready to walk in the Desert Pride Parade under the Tucson Weekly banner. A good time was had by hounds and their humans.

Walk-a-thon 2007

Walk-a-thon
Marijo Lewis and Chris Ellis participated in a walk-a-thon for the Community Outreach program in Saddlebrooke. They thought it would be a good venue for people to see Rogue and Nash, then AGR kennel dogs as they walked along. There seemed to be a lot of interest and they handed out brochures. Rogue and Nash really enjoyed the walk and the attention. Thank you for the exposure.

Deborah Haak

Deborah Haak’s used to own a greyhound Foxy went to the Rainbow Bridge. She came to us with a plan that she was doing for her Honors Program at Desert Christian High School. Mary Freeman mentored her. Deborah spent the year promoting greyhound rescue to all who would listen, introduced AGR to a new meet-and-greet tabling venue, and got our audio public service announcement on the radio. AGR thanks Deborah for all her hard work and follow through. We hope she continues to be a vital volunteer for AGR.
Here’s her Honors paper.

Hero Hound: Wynonna

Hero Hound: Wynonna
Nonna, who normally sleeps through the night never leaving her open crate, woke us up at 2 a.m. barking. When I went to scold her for making so much noise, she was looking out the big picture windows in the playroom and still barking. I looked out the window and saw that a house across the wash was on fire! Of course, I immediately called 911. I don't think the fire had been reported yet. The house was completely engulfed before the fire department arrived, so it was completely destroyed. It was 20-25 minutes before anyone else in the neighborhood even knew there was a fire. The fire trucks woke them up, not the fire. I believe that the surrounding houses and wash would have had considerable damage had Nonna not woke us up. She is our hero hound. (Tamyra Althof)

Texas Instruments at Greyhound Spa Day

Through the United Way’s Days of Caring event, six adults from Texas Instruments and their children and grand children came to the kennel for Greyhound Spa Day on October 7, 2006. Our guests exercised the hounds, brushed, washed, and pampered the hounds. There was a whole lot of loving going on. They didn’t want to leave so they walked the hounds some more and helped clean up. The dogs were pooped by the time the people left. There was a real connection going on. Texas Instruments also brought $100 worth of kennel supplies.

Greyhounds go to the Jewish Community Center

Greyhounds Go to the Jewish Community Center
As like every year the JCC asked Arizona Greyhound Rescue to bring our hounds back so 300-400 students ages 1 to 5 could learn about pet safety and greyhound love. On August 22 and 23 Anne Marie King brought the big hunk of love, Poseidon; Kitty Prokop brought the marvelous Major; Donna Haywood brought friendly Zoey; and Lori Riegel brought her bashful Bitsy and Hinley, schnauzer/terrier mix. A great time was had by all. (Major went to the Rainbow Bridge in September 2006. He raced in Florida and was larger than most Arizona greyhounds but a gentle giant.)

Terry Baker and Gracie

Pets for Vets
Gracie and Terry Baker have been visiting patients and staff at the Southern Arizona VA Hospital as part of the Pets for Vets Therapy Dog Program. In April 2005, Gracie was recognized for 100 hours of volunteer service. She is one of the canine volunteers.

Gracie can be seen every other Saturday going from room to room visiting patients in the geriatric and hospice wards, as well as surgical waiting rooms and the main hospital. Gracie has been known to split the shift with Onyx, who is working on her 100 hours as well. They also visit patients and staff a the Tucson Medical Center. Gracie went to the Rainbow Bridge on August 16, 2006. She touched many lives and will be greatly missed.
